Please Vote No on Prop 105
ARGUMENT OPPOSING PROPOSITION 105
This poorly conceived initiative will put an end to light rail expansion in Phoenix. Valley Metro Rail has worked exceptionally well, has proven itself by carrying 46,000 people daily, and has created tremendous residential and business growth along the route. Its expansion is sorely needed. Should this initiative pass, federal money designated for Phoenix will go to Los Angeles, Seattle and other cities with expanding light rail systems.
Worse, this initiative will also put an end to any possibility of commuter rail and intercity rail serving Phoenix. The Phoenix metropolitan area holds 4.5 million people and is the fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation. But it’s also the largest metropolitan area without commuter rail. This delays our daily commute and holds us back from recruiting companies to relocate to Phoenix. The Maricopa Association of Governments is studying our transportation options, and commuter rail may be one of the modes chosen to go to the voters in the future. If Proposition 105 passes, it will forbid Phoenix from participating. Without the city’s involvement, there is no reason for commuter rail.
Amtrak has designated the Phoenix-Tucson corridor as a possible state-supported intercity rail corridor. The drive on I-10 between the two cities is bad, getting worse and highly dangerous during dust storms. If Proposition 105 passes, it will forbid Phoenix from participating. Without the city’s involvement, there is no reason for intercity rail.
We at All Aboard Arizona urge you to vote No on Proposition 105.
